Unspoiled natural beauty, tranquillity, and an authentic Greek experience. Halki remains largely untouched by mass tourism, making it a haven for those seeking peace and natural beauty. Unlike many Greek islands, Halki retains its traditional charm. The narrow streets, distinctive houses with their vibrant flowers, and the friendly locals give you a true sense of island life. There are no large hotels, only tempting tavernas, comfortable cafes and a slower pace of life that allow you to relax and savour every moment.
Beaches
There are two popular beaches within easy walking distance of the Nikitas Apartments, Villa Yorgos and the Halki Townhouse, these are Pondamos and Ftenayia. Both have sunbeds, a beach bar and a taverna. The beach at Kania is about 40 minutes’ walk away (or 10 minutes by boat) and is smaller, but brilliant for snorkelling. It also has sunbeds, a beach bar and a taverna.

Rich History and Culture
Halki is rich in history, and its ancient and medieval sites, make it a perfect destination for those interested in history and heritage. Visit the Monastery of St John the Baptist at the far end of the island, which offers a glimpse into the island’s past. Explore the ruins of the medieval Castle and the old village just beneath it.
In the past there were two main settlements on Halki, the old village (Chorio) and the harbour area (Nimborio). The Chorio, located beneath St Mary’s Church and the Crusader Castle, was largely deserted after WWII, with Nimborio being the centre of island life. But in recent years families have been renovating homes and cultivating the hillsides again. The natural amphitheatre of the island’s harbour is still where most life takes place, and the majority of shops, bars and tavernas are located there.
Halki has a small local population of approximately 300 people, so you will become familiar with various village characters and friends with the proprietors of your favourite bars, tavernas and shops. You will find a warm welcome from everyone. The setting is authentically Greek and the greeting you receive is genuine.

Ideal for Outdoor Activities
For nature lovers Halki offers plenty of opportunities to explore the landscape. Enjoy hiking through the island's hills, or explore the waters around the island which are perfect for snorkelling and diving, with an abundance of marine life to discover.
Walks
Spring and autumn are particularly popular times for walking on Halki. The old village beneath the crusader castle and the Monastery of St John are two of the most well-trodden paths, though they both require stamina!
The crusader castle is an impressive sight from below and repays the exertion of the climb up with fantastic views of Halki and the islands over to Rhodes. On a clear day you can even see Karpathos in the distance.
The Monastery of St John is one of Halki’s most special places. It lies at the farthest point from Emborio harbour at the end of Halki’s only road up and into the mountains. The church itself is small but has beautiful icons inside, and the courtyard with its ancient pine tree and the surrounding monks’ cells, is a wonderful place to experience the serene atmosphere of the monastic setting.
For the adventurous and fit, the Temple of Apollo ruins above Kania are well worth the effort of the clamber up for a sense of Halki’s pre-Christian past.
The village church is dedicated to Saint Nikolas and is well worth a look inside. It is beautifully decorated and cared for, and rich in the atmosphere of the Greek orthodox faith. There are also several other small monasteries within easy walking distance which merit a visit.
Shops and Amenities
The village has quite a wide variety of shops for such a small island. There are several mini markets, a bakery and various different places to buy souvenirs.
There is a Post Office, open every weekday morning, and an ATM, both located on the harbour front. There is also a medical centre in the village, and an excellent pharmacy.

Delicious Local Cuisine
The island’s tavernas serve fresh, locally sourced seafood and traditional Greek dishes, offering a true taste of Halki. Local specialities such as Halki Pasta and the delicious mezze plates are definitely worth a try.
Tavernas and Bars
There are a variety of tavernas located around the harbour area (called ‘Piazza’ by the locals), and one at each of the main beaches. The food served is mostly traditional home-cooked Greek food with a variety of meat and fish dishes. Vegetarian and vegan options are always on offer. There are also several cafes which serve Greek sweets, cakes, ice-creams and other snacks in addition to all kinds of drinks.

Accessibility and Ease of Travel
Despite its peaceful seclusion, Halki is easily accessible by ferry from Rhodes and other islands, making it a perfect destination for a short getaway or an extended stay. The island is small enough to explore on foot, allowing you to experience every corner of its beauty without the need for a car.
